A project exploring Matisse’s works and his cut out style. Students link his technique to the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic games, creating a contemporary minimal sports poster.
Extending the technique, students progress onto the work of Bernardo Henning, who has influences of Matisse’s shapes and mark making within his designs.
The project can be completed by hand, or digitally using Photoshop.

The project was originally carried out in celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee but can be adapted to suit any portrait and subject matter.
Frida Kahlo artist research sheet, looking at the illustrator Liz Clements as an aid to researching into Kahlo’s life and story.
Tattoos have been added in the style of Clements, which students will then need to research into and show understanding of what the symbols may represent.
